What is Design Registration?

Design Registration is a legal process that protects the unique visual appearance, shape, configuration, or pattern of a product under the Designs Act, 2000.

It gives the owner exclusive rights to use, manufacture, and sell a product with that specific design, and prevents others from copying it.

What Can Be Registered as a Design?

Your design must be original and relate to the external appearance (not function). Common examples:

Timeframe:

• 6–9 months, if no objections

• 12+ months, if there are objections

Design Registration Validity:

• Initial protection: 10 years
